Sulfuric Acid Cooler Selection

Evaluate sulfuric acid cooling with a complete fluid specification and a documented materials basis. A welded block design is considered only where the selected wetted materials and operating envelope are suitable.

Define the acid stream
State sulfuric acid concentration by mass, inlet and required outlet temperatures, flow range and operating pressure. Include water content, suspended solids and contaminants, together with startup, dilution or upset conditions that can change the materials assessment.
Select materials before fixing the configuration
Assess the plate alloy, welds, panel lining where applicable, connections and panel seals as a complete wetted system. Do not select an alloy from the words “sulfuric acid” alone. Provide available corrosion data or service experience for the actual concentration and temperature range; obtain specialist materials review where needed.
Balance cooling duty and pressure drop
Specify the cooling-medium supply temperature, available flow, outlet limit and allowable pressure drop on both sides. Review the thermal approach and operating range together. Include the effect of deposits and the planned cleaning method in the design basis.
Plan inspection and acceptance
Define the required material certificates, inspection scope, pressure or leak-test requirements and acceptance documentation. Confirm maintenance access and a compatible cleaning method. A proposal should state the approved fluid envelope and any operating restrictions explicitly.
