Welded Block Heat Exchanger Cleaning

Select a cleaning approach from the deposit type, equipment construction and approved maintenance instructions. This guide supports planning; it does not replace the unit-specific service procedure.

Establish why performance changed
Compare temperature, flow and pressure-drop records with the operating baseline. Confirm the measurement conditions and process changes before attributing a loss of duty to fouling. Obtain deposit information or inspection evidence where available.
Review mechanical and chemical options
Removable panels can provide access for mechanical cleaning while the welded plate pack remains intact. Cleaning-in-place may be appropriate when the deposits and wetted materials support a compatible chemical process. Neither method is universally suitable; confirm the method for the selected equipment and fouling.
Prepare access and a safe service plan
Use the unit-specific manual and the site’s isolation and maintenance procedures. Establish isolation, depressurisation, cooling, draining and decontamination requirements before opening equipment. Qualified personnel should plan lifting, panel handling and access around the exchanger.
Protect plates, welds and seals
Confirm cleaning chemistry, tools and operating parameters against the approved maintenance instructions. Do not select a cleaning pressure, chemical concentration or exposure time from a generic website. Review panel seals and the condition of accessible components during service.
Verify before returning to service
Follow the specified reassembly and acceptance procedure, including required seal replacement, tightening sequence and leak or pressure checks. Document findings and compare the restored operation with the agreed baseline. Use that evidence to review the next inspection or cleaning interval.
